CANON Powershot S400 “memory error” fix
My canon powershot S400 encountered a weird error “memory card error”. Sometimes it shows E51 and E50 error. I researched about my problem and got this message from CANON USA.
A CF Card communication problem has occurred in some PowerShot S400 Digital Cameras. We would like to convey the details and our service policy.
When communication problems with CF cards occur in the this product, the following messages are displayed during use:
“Memory Card Error”
“Corrupted Data”
“Unidentified Image”
“E50″
“E51″
The display of such a message, however, does not necessarily indicate the existence of the CF Card communication problem that has been identified. If it is determined by Canon USA that your PowerShot S400 camera is exhibiting the CF Card communication problem that has been identified, the camera will be repaired free of charge, regardless of whether the camera is still under warranty. In addition, a refund of a previously paid repair will be made if it is determined by Canon USA that the repair of your PowerShot S400 was prompted by the CF Card communication problem that has been identified. continue reading here
I was shocked! This problem should have a total “recall”. I researched more, and found a good digital camera wannabies forum and found a great solution. Dismantling the camera and reset the tiny internal lithium 3v battery. “RESET” means take the little battery out of its holder and placing it back again, that should do the reset. Just like a CMOS battery in your computer.
At first i’m not sure about it but I thought what the heck, this piece of sh*t done a lot of trouble to me, the canon s400 was unusable anyway..At first I was hesitant, I didn’t crack my camera yet, i did more memory card formatting check the batteries, check every thing but nothing works, so this is it! Crack this thing!
I got a diagram for Canon Powershot S400. Here is the complete diagram ready for download.
After i got this diagram. I took some juice and my tiny screwdriver then started dissecting my little camera.

And that’s it! Its running smoothly. But my question is how long will keep it running? This is a total factory defect. So everytime this crazy error goes back again, I need to reset the tiny battery again and again…
I wonder why the reset of the tiny battery solved this problem. By the way another information is this, after you reset the battery, and return everything in it’s place, turn on your camera and it will ask you to set a new date and time.
BTW another thing to reset the camera itself is to press “menu” for about 20 seconds and it will ask for a reset. Well i guess this one is totally different for the battery reset.
Never used second hand or cheap lithium battery, ask your nearest Canon Distributor. That’s all and happy cracking.

Hi - Thanks for the info. I was having the same issue with my Canon Powershot S400 & I found you on Google. I came across a place that said all you need to do is (believe it or nor) violently shake the camera by its strap a few times, turn it on & off a few times & the problem is fixed! I try it for the heck of it (skeptical I must say - since when does anything free work), low & behold - it worked! I have been frustrating reading about this issue…. charging the battery… shaking the camera… I removed the little battery, put the camera back together, but the same error… I then formatted the card using the camera after the little battery reset and TADA !!!! The camera works !!!!! Thanks for this post it was a life saver !!

People, the problem is caused by the date/time battery reaching the end of its useful life. Removing and reinserting it is only a temporary fix. It needs to be replaced. When your battery reaches the end of its life and starts causing these symptoms, Canon will replace it for free, including free shipping. This is regardless of your camera’s warranty status, or even if you bought it used off of ebay. You can replace this battery yourself, but for most people wouldn’t recommend this as there is a danger of severe electrical shock from the flash capacitor.
Here’s the Canon advisory link for the free repair.
