Tribute to Julia Campbell

This is my tribute to Ms. Julia Campbell. She is part of the Peace Corps volunteers, they are the people who travel overseas to make real differences in the lives of real people. Julia Campbell is 40 years old, from Fairfax, Virginia, who has been missing for almost a week and found dead some meters away from a hiking trail. Julia Campbell is really a hero for me personally. Her dedication to help other people especially from third world countries is really exceptional, Julia is the kind of person who doesn’t think of herself but unselfishly shares her love and affection to others especially to the poor people.

Philippine authorities said they have beefed up a mountain search for the woman, but have found no new clues on her whereabouts.

Thirty police joined 50 other officers, U.S. Embassy personnel, army troops and local travel guides in combing forests and hiking trails for Campbell, said regional police Chief Superintendent Raul Gonzales.

She was last seen April 8 in Banaue in Ifugao province, about 160 miles north of Manila, where she had planned to hike alone to the area’s famed mountainside rice terraces, said U.S. Embassy spokesman Matthew Lussenhop. Via ABC News

At the age of 38, I decided to step out of the rat race of New York, join the Peace Corps and board a plane for Manila. - Julia Campbell

  1. [...] A life lived with purpose, bettering the lives of people around the world, creates a vacuum when it’s gone, and the pain of it reaches beyond those closest to you. A lot of people talk about changing the world or doing something “more” with their lives - you did that and probably without realizing the impact you’d have. I don’t know the proper way to make a tribute to you but I think it’ll be found through people being inspired by your example and following your lead. Read Julia’s own words about her time in the Philippines here. More about her here and here. [...]

  2. i do not personally know Julia Campbell but I was rattled about her death … being a Filipino, i am very disgusted about the crime especially that she was a great friend to most of the people in Sorsogon

  3. She seemed really cool, peace loving and hot! What a waste of a life. I hope the locals get the people that sis this and make them build homes for the homeless for enternity.

  5. Nice tribute. I think as Filipinos we owe Julia not only for her life but also for the inspiration. Her smile and her eyes on the first photo only tells that she lived her life the way she want it. She was fulfilled!

  6. way back when i was a kid, seeing these peace corps volunteers gives me inspiration and hope. As a kid, they are heroes. It makes me proud that two of them are my dad’s frequent visitors. Here in the Cordilleras (specifically in Benuet), they are always treated with respect and people would alwyas look up to them. We know that we owe something from them. The news of her death brings shame and feeling of disgrace. How I wish this will never happen again. To Julia Campbell: I honor you so much for your love, kindness and selflessness.

  7. I was shocked when I saw the AP story about Julia’s death in Saturday’s paper. I knew Julia during her early days as a Times freelancer. A nicer, more sensitive person couldn’t be found.

As other journalists have recalled in news accounts, Julia was also a hard-working reporter with an intense desire to get the story at hand.

I’m not surprised she joined the Peace Corps. She was that kind of person. The world needs more like her. She will be missed.

  8. Thank you for the tribute. Do visit http://www.juliacampbellampark.org/, Ifugao’s own way of tribute to this great soul.
