‘PC ng Bayan’ low cost computers for government employees

“PC ng Bayan” project have been sold to government employees since it was introduced a year ago, according to records of the Department of Budget and Management-Procurement Service (DBM-PS).

The project is modeled after a low-cost PC program by the Thailand government that sells sub-500 US dollar (25,000 pesos) computers to the public.

The PC ng Bayan program offers two types of models: one that features an Intel-based model and another using an AMD processor. The units, which cost from 16,500 pesos to 16,700, pesos, include a whole PC with a Linux operating system.

16,000 Pesos? That’s the exact amount how much an AMD powered computer cost even in stores. I wonder why they called it “Low Cost” or “PC ng Bayan”. Oh, maybe because it’s using a free Linux OS  tsk tsk politics.
