Tribute to Efren “bata” Reyes

Efren "bata" ReyesEfren Reyes was also called as “bata” and “the magician”. Efren “bata” Reyes has won many of the most prestigious nine-ball tournaments like Sands Regency Open; the 1994 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship; the 1995 Pro Tour Championship; and the 2002 ESPN Challenge of Champions. He also won the one day competition winner takes all entitled “Color of Money I” and the “Color of Money II” defeating Earl Strickland. On 2003 Efren “bata” Reyes was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America’s Hall of Fame.

Efren Reyes started as a young player. Billiard for him that time was all about money. During the sixties and seventies,he played three cushion billiards. By the time he was 20, he had claimed to be the best player in the Philippines, which is very likely considering successes in the United States and in Europe against some of the best 9-ball players in the world. At present, he lives in his home town of Angeles City, Philippines.

Most recently, Reyes won the 2006 International Pool Tour World Open 8-Ball Championship over Rodney Morris. At $500,000, this was the largest prize money tournament in the history of pocket billiards.

After winning the IPT World 8-Ball Open tournament last Sept. 10 in Nevada for $500,000, Efren “bata” Reyes went home in Angeles City last Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2006), flew to Jakarta the next day and three days later had another $10,000 in his pocket which was the same amount he won in topping the SMB Tour’s kickoff leg in Vietnam last May. Efren Reyes is the BEST of the best pool player in the World!
